Interns

Thank you for considering the Orfalea Family Children’s Center at UCSB. As a teaching assistant, volunteer or intern, you have the opportunity to make a significant impact on children’s lives and the quality of care families receive at the Children’s Center. Students from UCSB (and other local colleges) are a vital part of OFCC’s program and essential to the day-to-day running of the center.

As a program accredited by National Academy for Early Childhood Programs, the center strives to provide a safe, consistent and secure environment for families while fostering a sense of wonder, curiosity, problem solving and fun! While working at the Center you will have many opportunities to interact with children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years, assist in curriculum set up (and clean-up!) and help maintain our developmentally appropriate environments.

In addition, we feel very strongly about our philosophy of Early Childhood Education and we are proud of our Childhood Programs. Ongoing professional development is a key component of the Teaching Assistant, Volunteer or Intern’s experience at the Center. During the school year, there are quarterly evening meetings which provide us with an opportunity to discuss center philosophy and practices, child development theory and time to meet and connect with each other. As we know, learning is an ongoing process and we learn by doing; it is important to ask the teachers and Coordinators lots of questions. Along with daily observations and feedback, teaching assistants will have a written evaluation done during the first quarter of employment. Several of our teaching assistants have gone on to work with children of all ages and some are even teachers and staff at the Children’s Center today!

The quality of our program depends on your participation. Thank you for your commitment.
